Texas GOP Representative Chip Roy lost the Republican nomination for Texas Attorney General to GOP state Senator Mayes Middleton.

Following the election, Roy took to social media to congratulate Middleton on his victory, noting that a full statement would follow.

Middleton (R-Texas) won Tuesday’s run-off election, which took place after neither candidate received the sufficient number of votes to receive the nomination in the March Republican primary.

He also provided a statement after his election win.

“Thank you Texas! We must unite to stop the woke left in November,” he posted to X on Wednesday.

The state senator is now set to face off against state Senator Nathan Johnson (D-Texas), who also won his run-off election on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump, who issued more than one hundred successful endorsements for the 2026 primaries, did not throw his backing behind either candidate — though he has been critical of Roy in the past.

The winner of the general election will fill the seat of current Attorney General Ken Paxton (R-Texas), who just won the Republican nomination for U.S. senator after defeating incumbent John Cornyn (R-Texas).

His victory is significant for Texas, as the state will see its first new senator since Ted Cruz (R-Texas) took office in 2013. Paxton will soon battle state Representative James Talarico (D-Texas) for the Senate seat in November.

Since Roy chose to run for attorney general instead of seeking reelection, his seat in the 21st congressional district is up for grabs. In March, Republican Mark Teixeira — backed by both Trump and Abbott — secured the GOP nomination. According to Ballotpedia, Teixeira will face Democrat nominee Kristin Hook and independent candidate Dan McQueen in the fall election to succeed Roy.
