State and local leaders from Arizona and Nevada gathered at their shared border on Monday night for a joint Memorial Day tribute at the Hoover Dam, honoring fallen service members while officially kicking off the region’s “Road to America250” celebrations.

To commemorate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence, the landmark was unveiled as the backdrop for a massive patriotic display.

Suspended across the face of the engineering marvel is a football field-sized American flag measuring 300-feet-wide by 150-feet-tall, which is brightly illuminated each night by a dramatic red, white, and blue light installation that will run through Independence Day.

Stars could be seen illuminating the sides of the Colorado River’s Black Canyon, and more than 550 automated LED lights were utilized for the display — pulling from the dam’s hydroelectricity.

The ceremony reportedly featured remarks from Governor Joe Lombardo (D-Nev.), Governor Katie Hobbs (D-Ariz.), Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson, Bureau of Reclamation Acting Regional Director Genevieve Johnson, and Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) President and CEO Steve Hill, according to a Tuesday press release from LVCVA.

The U.S. Department of the Interior called it “one of the most ambitious patriotic installations ever displayed.” It also announced on X that the light display will ignite the Hoover Dam nightly through Saturday, July 4th, marking America’s Semiquincentennial.

The activation of the display marked the unofficial beginning of summer travel and America250’s “Great American Road Trip” initiative, pushed by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to encourage Americans to explore uniquely American destinations and attractions across the country.

“America’s promise has always been renewed by generations willing to make this country freer, safer, stronger, and more prosperous than they found it. That is the promise of America. And there is no greater testament to that spirit than Hoover Dam. Ninety years ago, in a time of hardship and uncertainty, Americans came together to build something the world had never seen. An iconic achievement of American infrastructure,” declared Governor Hobbs.

“As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, Nevada is proud to help tell the story of innovation, exploration, and progress that shapes our nation, from Hoover Dam to our growing technology and infrastructure sectors to the world-class tourism industry. Nevada has always played an important role in American history. For generations, Hoover Dam has stood as one of the greatest engineering achievements in American history. It represents determination, ingenuity, hard work, and the willingness of Americans to take on challenges that once seemed impossible,” Governor Lombardo added.

The Hoover Dam was built during the Great Depression, being completed in 1936. It generates over 4 billion kilowatt-hours of hydroelectricity and controls floods between Arizona and Nevada.
