President Donald Trump has condemned the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, renewing calls for a dedicated White House ballroom.
The president and members of his Cabinet were evacuated by the Secret Service after a shooting at the Washington Hilton, where attendees reported hearing multiple gunshots.
Soon after the attack occurred, the president took to Truth Social to reinforce the need for the White House ballroom.

On Sunday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) sent a letter to the attorney representing the National Trust for Historic Preservation—the group suing the Trump Organization to block construction of the planned 90,000-square-foot ballroom—citing Saturday night’s shooting and urging the organization to drop its legal challenge.
“Your client should voluntarily dismiss this frivolous lawsuit today in light of last night’s assassination attempt on President Trump,” the letter signed by General Brett Shumate for the DOJ’s civil division read. “If your client doesn’t dismiss the lawsuit by 9:00 AM on Monday, the government will move to dissolve the injunction and dismiss the case in light of last night’s extraordinary events.”
