President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump delivered remarks at the annual White House Congressional Picnic on the South Lawn, emphasizing a shared commitment to national unity and legislative collaboration.

Speaking from the Truman Balcony to a crowd of lawmakers and their families from both sides of the political aisle, the first lady opened the evening’s addresses by highlighting a major, unanimous legislative breakthrough that occurred earlier in the day.

Melania used her time at the podium to celebrate the passage of the Fostering the Future Act in the House of Representatives.

She expressed profound gratitude to Chairman Jason Smith, Chairman Darin LaHood, and Ranking Member Danny Davis, praising the House for acting unanimously to lift America’s foster children above partisan politics.

Highlighting the momentum generated by this legislative success, the first lady called upon the U.S. Senate to pass the bill and bring it across the finish line to the president’s desk for his signature.

She noted that such achievements reflect what can be accomplished when Republicans and Democrats align with a shared purpose for the betterment of young Americans, citing it alongside the previous bipartisan success of the TAKE IT DOWN Act.

After Melania’s speech, President Trump addressed the gathering, reinforcing the theme of setting aside political differences to enjoy a night of camaraderie.

The president praised the legislative milestone achieved by the House and echoed the sentiment that the evening serves as an important social ritual for the nation’s leaders to experience a moment of light-heartedness before entering the busy summer months. He also thanked the members of Congress for their attendance and their continued efforts on behalf of the American public.

The annual event provided a relaxed, Americana-styled atmosphere on the South Lawn, complete with music from the United States Marine Band, traditional picnic food, and friendly gaming competitions for the families in attendance.

Following their remarks, both the president and first lady descended to the lawn to greet attendees, shake hands, and pose for photographs with members of Congress, ending a night aimed at fostering more unity between the executive and legislative branches.
