Democrat candidate Maureen Galindo, who faced backlash after calling for the imprisonment of “American Zionists,” lost the primary run-off election for a U.S. House seat in Texas.

Despite trailing behind her in the March primary, Johnny Garcia (D-Texas) defeated Galindo (D-Texas) in Tuesday’s run-off election, making him the Democrat nominee for Congressional District 35, which includes areas connecting San Antonio to Austin.

The race garnered national attention following Galindo’s alleged antisemitic comments, sparking outrage within her own party.

An Instagram post on her account stated that if she were elected, she would “write legislation so that all Zionism and support of Zionism is undoubtedly Anti-Semitic, since it’s Zionists harming the Semites.”

“She’ll turn Karnes ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) Detention Center into a prison for American Zionists and former ICE officers for human trafficking,” the post read, also inferring widespread pedophilia among “Zionists.”

Following the comments, leaders of the Democrat party immediately condemned the rhetoric and her campaign. According to media reports, questions were raised about spending to support Galindo, with Democrats accusing the GOP of interference.

“Republicans tried to meddle in our election but tonight TX Democrats showed that we won’t stand for hate,” Garcia wrote on X after the election. “I’m honored to be your official democratic nominee for Texas’ 35th Congressional District.”

The district was one affected by recent redistricting efforts in the state, reportedly giving Republicans an edge in the November general election.

Garcia is set to face off against Republican candidate Carlos De La Cruz (R-Texas), who also won his run-off election on Tuesday against State Representative John Lujan (R-Texas).

In February, President Donald Trump gave a glowing endorsement for Cruz, but Lujan was endorsed by Governor Greg Abbott (R-Texas). Cruz’s win appears to highlight Trump’s powerful influence in the Lone Star State.
