Texas State Representative James Talarico admitted during an interview that his previous comments on sensitive cultural issues “missed the mark,” including his previous assertion that God is “non-binary.”
Talarico (D-Texas), who secured the Democrat nomination for the U.S. Senate in March, was asked in an interview on Wednesday with CBS News if he wanted to clarify some of the controversial statements that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R-Texas) — his opponent for the general election — has been referencing in recent days.
“There are some statements that I have made that I certainly regret. There are statements that I have made where I have missed the mark. I will be the first to admit that. But Ken Paxton is intentionally clipping my cringey comments to distract from his career of corruption,” said Talarico, just hours after Paxton’s victory over Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) in the GOP primary runoff this week.

Paxton, whom President Donald Trump endorsed earlier this month, has harnessed comments the Democrat nominee made while serving as a state legislator in his general election advertisements.
One ad from Paxton’s campaign, which highlighted Talarico’s comments regarding transgender rights and immigration, ended with the tagline, “Radical Talarico: Too low-T for Texas,” proposing that Talarico has a low level of testosterone and, therefore, masculinity.
Talarico previously said during a 2021 debate on a Texas bill targeting transgender athletes, “Modern science recognizes that there are many more than two biological sexes — in fact, there are six,” a comment that was later blasted by President Trump. During his victory speech this week, Paxton also afforded Talarico the nicknames “Six-gender Jimmy” and “James Tala-freako” for this assertion.
“So, they are running a handful of highlights of things you have said in the past, and I wanted to give you an opportunity to respond or clarify. In 2021, in a speech during debate over transgender issues, you said, ‘God is non-binary.’ What did you mean by that?” CBS News’ Ed O’Keefe asked Talarico.
“Well, you know, I think I was being intentionally provocative with that statement, but what it means is that God cannot be defined by human categories. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, says that in Christ there is neither male nor female,” Talarico responded.
The candidate appeared to refer to Galatians 3:28, in which the Apostle Paul wrote, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus,” according to the New International Version (NIV) translation.
O’Keefe pressed, “Do you still believe there are six biological sexes?”
“I know there are two sexes, men and women. I also know there is a very small percentage of people who have these chromosomal abnormalities, and I believe they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect,” Talarico replied.
