Bitcoin may be getting a serious privacy experiment without a fork, a sidechain, or a rewrite of the network’s consensus rules.
A new research design called Shielded Bitcoin proposes private, bitcoin-denominated transfers that borrow core ideas from Zcash. The pitch is ambitious: hide the sender, recipient and amount while using Bitcoin itself to publish the data needed to reconstruct the payment history.
That does not mean private BTC payments are ready to ship. The proposal is early, it has no launch date, and its hardest bridge problem remains unfinished.
Still, it is a notable attempt to move privacy from a philosophical Bitcoin debate into a concrete technical design.
