Ethereum does not settle transactions instantly. Puffer and Google Cloud are testing a way to make applications feel much closer to instant by putting financial collateral behind an early promise about what a transaction will do.
The idea is called a preconfirmation. Instead of forcing an app to wait for Ethereum’s full settlement process, a gateway can commit to a specific result in advance.
If the operator breaks that promise, collateral can be slashed.
CryptoSlate says Google Cloud will operate a gateway for Puffer’s UniFi network, receiving transactions and guaranteeing their results before final settlement. Puffer CEO Amir Forouzani said both UniFi and the Puffer Preconf service were still in a testing environment as of September
