Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced that Poland is prepared to host U.S. troops redeployed from Germany, following President Donald Trump’s directive for the Pentagon to withdraw 5,000 American soldiers from Germany over the next year.

“If for any reason — discussed and publicly known — President Donald Trump decides to reduce the American military component in Germany, we in Poland are ready to accept American troops; we have the infrastructure in place to do so,” said Nawrocki in a speech during NATO exercises in Lithuania.

“Regardless of political views, everyone is aware that the presence of American troops — whether in Poland or other Central and Eastern European countries — increases security,” he added.

Tensions between Washington and Berlin had reached a boiling point following a number of back-and-forth exchanges between President Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz — regarding the conflict in Iran.

The friction intensified after Merz suggested that Iran’s dominance over the Strait of Hormuz was “humiliating” to the United States, prompting a characteristically blunt retort from the U.S. president, who told the chancellor to focus on “fixing his broken country” rather than criticizing American military strategy.

Amidst this diplomatic fracture, Nawrocki’s push for a stronger American presence has created domestic friction with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

While Tusk remains eager to expand the U.S. footprint in Poland, he has also publicly warned against “poaching” troops from neighbors, emphasizing that he will not allow Poland to be “the instrument used to shatter European unity.”

Despite these internal political disagreements, the transition of American forces toward Polish soil appears increasingly likely. Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki confirmed that Warsaw and Washington are already engaged in active military and diplomatic negotiations to bolster the current contingent of 10,000 U.S. troops.

While Bosacki noted that Poland would have preferred the troops remain in Germany to maintain regional stability, he clarified that the government would not object to hosting personnel redeployed from German bases.

Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski echoed this pragmatic stance at a defense conference in Warsaw, asserting that additional American forces “will be welcome” regardless of their previous stationing.
