Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has endorsed San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan to replace her when she retires from Congress after nearly four decades in the House of Representatives.

On Monday, Pelosi released a short video seated next to Chan in front of a Golden Gate Bridge backdrop.

“I know and love this district,” the Speaker Emerita declared. “I know the Congress, and I know Connie.”

Pelosi put an arm around Chan’s back, continuing, “I’m proud to endorse Democrat Connie Chan and ask you to join me in electing her to Congress.”

Pelosi, the first woman to serve as House speaker in the United States, said that Chan was the “leader best prepared to carry forward the fight for San Francisco in the Congress.”

“At a time when fundamental freedoms and democratic values are under assault, we need a leader in Congress who is prepared to fight – forcefully and effectively,” she wrote in a letter to residents of California’s 11th Congressional District, which covers the majority of San Francisco.

She added that Chan “understands San Francisco — our values, our diversity, our communities.”

According to her campaign website, Chan’s left-wing positions include:

  • Supporting a public bank run by the city of San Francisco
  • Supporting San Francisco’s “Union-at-Home” ordinance that lets tenants collectively bargain with landlords
  • Pushing expanded social services such as fare-free public transit and extended food assistance programs
  • Vowing to “stand up to the Trump administration” to end federal immigration enforcement raids and advocating for immigration reform to end the “inhuman abuses and discriminatory practices of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and CBP (Customs and Border Protection)”
  • Supporting the Green New Deal
  • Promising to enact “Medicare for All” and restore the Affordable Care Act of the former Obama administration
  • Pushing for Medicare, Medicaid and other federal health programs to cover “gender affirming care” and promising to include “transgender youth” in “sports teams consistent with their gender identity”
  • Vowing to fund Planned Parenthood to provide the “full range” of abortion to “over 2 million Americans every year”

Chan, 47, was born in British Hong Kong. Her family moved to Taiwan when she was five years old, then to San Francisco’s Chinatown when she was thirteen years old. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis with a double major in Religious Studies and Classical Chinese.

She assumed office on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in January 2021 and was appointed as the chair of the Budget Committee. In this role, she supported an extension of the COVID-19 pandemic-era CalFresh emergency benefits.

Pelosi, 86, announced in November that she would not seek reelection at the end of her current term in 2027.

President Donald Trump told Fox News at the time, “The retirement of Nancy Pelosi is a great thing for America.”

California’s crowded District 11 race also features Democrat candidates rocklet scientist John “Gus” Buffler, economic policy director Saikat Chakrabarti, small business owner Keith Freedman, technology advocate Omed Hamid, civil rights advocate Gregory M. Haynes, attorney Marie Hurabiell and State Senator Scott Wiener (D-Calif.), who is leading in most polls, as of early May. Republican candidates include local newspaper publisher David Ganezer and social management scientist Jingchao Xiong, while Homeowners Association (HOA) Treasurer Nathan Deer is running independently. The primary will be held on June 2nd.
