In the deeply purple state of Pennsylvania, Tuesday’s primary election results have set the stage for the coming fight in this year’s general midterm elections.
Most candidates for congressional districts ran unopposed, as did both the Democrat and Republican candidates for governor, indicating that the real battle for many key elections is reserved for November.

Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity (R-Pa.), endorsed by President Donald Trump, will face off against incumbent Governor Josh Shapiro (D-Pa.), who has served since 2023, for the Pennsylvania governorship. The last Republican governor to hold office in the Keystone State was Tom Corbett (R-Pa.) in 2015.
Despite a Democrat governorship at the time, Trump won the state in the 2024 presidential election, revealing the partisan divide and confirming its swing state status.
In the lieutenant governor primary race, incumbent Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis (D-Pa.), who ran unopposed in this election, will run against Jason Richey (R-Pa.), who defeated his opponent by a wide margin in the Republican primary.
Only a handful of the primary races for congressional districts featured more than one candidate. On the Democrat side, Bob Harvie (D-Pa.) won his primary race for House District 1, setting him up to take on incumbent U.S. Representative Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), who ran unopposed, in the general election.
For the 3rd congressional district, representing part of the city of Philadelphia, Chris Rabb (D-Pa.) beat out three other Democrat challengers, likely making him the next representative, as no Republican candidates ran for the deeply blue district.
In House District 7, Bob Brooks (D-Pa.) also won against three other Democrat competitors, pairing him to run against incumbent U.S. Representative Ryan Mackenzie (R-Pa.), who ran unopposed.
Setting up a sequel, Janelle Stelson (D-Pa.) won her race in the state’s 10th congressional district and is set to face off against incumbent U.S. Representative Scott Perry (R-Pa.), who ran unopposed. In the 2024 election, Stelson lost the district, which includes the state’s capital, to Perry by just one percentage point, according to The Guardian.
In the 12th congressional district, incumbent U.S. Representative Summer Lee (D-Pa.) won the Democrat primary and will face off against James Hayes (R-Pa.), who ran unopposed, in November.
In the only Republican primary House race that featured more than one candidate, Tony Guy (R-Pa.) defeated his opponent and will face incumbent U.S. Representative Chris Deluzio (D-Pa.) in November to decide who will represent the 17th congressional district.
With Republicans holding a thin majority in Congress, November’s general elections, including Pennsylvania’s, have garnered national attention as they will decide whether President Trump will have a unified government in the second half of his final term in office.
