New Bitcoin Whales Are Sitting on a Record $9 Billion in Paper Gains

Bitcoin’s newest large holders are sitting on a mountain of paper profits, and that is becoming one of the market’s biggest near-term pressure points.

Cointelegraph reports that short-term-holder whales reached a record $9.07 billion in aggregate unrealized profit on September 4, based on CryptoQuant data stretching back to 2016. These are wallets holding Bitcoin for less than six months, which makes their behavior more sensitive to relatively small price moves than the behavior of long-established holders.

The number is striking, but the speed at which it can change matters just as much. A Bitcoin decline of just under 2% cut the cohort’s aggregate paper profit by roughly 17% the following day.
