Germany Sure Can Do This!

As then-German Chanceller Angela Merkel flung open her nation’s doors to millions of Muslim migrants back in 2015, she offered her unfortunate countrymen, who had no idea what they were in for, a slogan for the whole enterprise that was positively American in its chipper optimism: Wir schaffen das, or “We can do this!” In the eleven years since then, Merkel’s perky phrase has proven true in innumerable contexts: Germans sure can do this!
