Florida GOP Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a new redrawn congressional map into law that is projected to expand the Republican delegation’s footprint in the state.
Drafted by the governor’s staff and approved by the Florida Legislature, the updated boundaries are set to increase the GOP’s hold to 24 seats, a shift from the 20-8 split between Republicans and Democrats following the previous election cycle.
“Signed, sealed, and delivered,” said DeSantis in an X post.
However, the redistricting effort, which could net the GOP four additional House seats in the upcoming November 2026 midterms, is already facing scrutiny and expected legal challenges over Democrat-led allegations of partisan gerrymandering.
This mid-decade redistricting follows a nationwide push initiated last year by President Donald Trump, who urged Republican-majority states to redraw their congressional boundaries.
Although proponents have highlighted that the new lines are legally sound, the Florida Democrat Party and various left-wing groups have already launched legal challenges, arguing that the map constitutes an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander that violates state protections.
“We will not back down and allow Ron Desantis to violate Florida’s Constitution. These are unconstitutional and violate Florida’s 2010 Fair District Amendment. The fight has just begun,” said Nikki Fried, Florida Democratic Party Chair, in an X post.
“The Court may have rewritten federal law, but it does not have the power to rewrite Florida’s Constitution. Florida Democrats will use every tool available under our state constitution to fight these illegal maps and stop this power grab,” Fried continued.
“And we will make clear to every voter in this state: while Washington weakens your protections, Florida Democrats are fighting to hold the line.”
