According to Josh Holmes, those Senate polls showed every Democrat winning except one in Mississippi. Calling this a “wake-up call” evades the damage: bogus polling can steer donations, demoralize volunteers and distort perceptions of an election. As Holmes put it, “This is not a victimless crime.” A polling firm manufactured the numbers, and news outlets helped turn fiction into political influence.
