Ethereum’s next speed upgrade may begin with a change that looks modest on paper: cutting block times from 12 seconds to 10.
But that two-second reduction would touch nearly every onchain interaction. Trades could confirm sooner, wallets could feel more responsive, and applications built on Ethereum could deliver faster feedback without waiting for a much larger redesign of the network.

The proposal is EIP-8198, better known as Quick Slots, and it targets a foundational timing rule that shapes how quickly every wallet and application receives a new block. Cointelegraph reported that Ethlabs is pushing the change as an initial step toward faster Ethereum blocks while researching the downstream systems that depend on today’s cadence.
