Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson walked down the red carpet at the 2026 Met Gala, rocking a black mohair tailcoat, a bow tie, and a matching pleated skirt, and encouraged other men to do the same.
The skirt was the talk of the party as the “Moana 2” actor, who has Samoan heritage through his mother, shared details about his outfit with reporters and Thom Browne’s team.
“I was like, look, in our culture, Polynesian culture, we rock lavalavas, we rock skirts. The most masculine men, not that I’m one of them, but the most masculine men wear lavalavas and skirts,” explained Johnson.
“I feel great!” he added in response to journalists’ questions about how wearing a skirt feels.

A lavalava is a rectangular cloth traditionally worn by both men and women as a skirt or kilt in Polynesian and other Oceanic cultures, primarily in Samoa. The garment often features vibrant tropical designs and can be suitable for school uniforms, work attire, church, beach outings and cultural celebrations.
Johnson also spoke about his views on masculinity at CinemaCon 2026, where he promoted Disney’s live-action “Moana.”
“The hero of our story is not a princess. She’s a warrior. All men of all ages, we should empower and support and champion all women. That’s what real masculinity looks like,” said Johnson to a CinemaCon crowd.
The 2026 Met Gala theme is “Fashion is Art” to celebrate the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, “Costume Art.” Red carpet attendees were prompted to treat their ensembles as works of art.
