Coinbase Chose Its New CTO. One Line in His Mandate Connects the AI Push to the May Layoffs

Coinbase has put one of its earliest engineers in charge of technology at the largest publicly traded crypto exchange in the United States.

Rob Witoff is the company’s new chief technology officer.

He joined Coinbase in 2014, when the exchange supported one asset and ran from a single codebase. He later left to build a cold-storage company, returned after Coinbase acquired it, and rejoined the executive team as head of platform.

His promotion would be notable on that history alone.

The timing makes it much bigger.
