Bitcoin Gets Its First Concrete Post-Quantum Signature Plan—But the Tradeoffs Are Heavy

Bitcoin’s quantum-computing debate just moved one step closer to engineering.

Blockstream researchers have published SHRINCS, which they describe as the first concrete post-quantum signature proposal built specifically for Bitcoin. The proposal supplies exact algorithms and an executable reference implementation instead of another distant warning about quantum computers.

The catch is equally important: the defense is not ready to slide into Bitcoin without cost.

According to Cointelegraph’s current summary of the research, the team reduced what began as an enormous hash-based signature by roughly 13.23 times. Even after that work, a SHRINCS signature remains about nine times larger than the signatures Bitcoin uses today.
