Democrat California governor candidate and former Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra has intensified his campaign by attacking rival candidate, billionaire Tom Steyer, over alleged connections to the utility company Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E).

A Becerra promotional account slammed Steyer over Memorial Day weekend for his alleged hypocrisy after promoting the fact that big companies like PG&E are spending against his campaign.

One post shared by Becerra’s account dates back to July 2025 and was posted by Steyer to his Instagram account. Steyer said “it was a pleasure” to discuss artificial intelligence’s energy needs with PG&E CEO Patricia Poppe.

“Less than a year ago, Tom Steyer was hanging out with PG&E CEO Patti Poppe,” said Friends of XB, which describes itself as Becerra’s headquarters.

“But he’s a changed man! It was months ago!” it added sarcastically.

In another post on Sunday, Friends of XB revealed one of Poppe’s LinkedIn posts in which she said she “loved sitting down to talk the future of energy with Tom Steyer” at an event hosted by Galvanize Climate Solutions, an investment firm co-founded by Steyer.

“Tom Steyer: PG&E hates me!” said the Becerra account. “PG&E CEO: Love hanging out with Tom Steyer!”

Interestingly, reports indicate that PG&E has launched a massive $10 million Political Action Committee specifically aimed at opposing Steyer’s candidacy.

Meanwhile, Steyer, the only billionaire on the ballot in California, has branded PG&E as one of his enemies as an appeal to his far-left voting base.

“PG&E really piss me off,” the billionaire said in a campaign advertisement in December, blaming the corporation for California’s high energy bills.

Recent polling shows a tightening race where Becerra has seen a significant surge in support. In early May, Becerra moved into the top three candidates with approximately 13% support. More recent data suggests he has continued this momentum, with some odds even placing him ahead of Steyer and other rivals.

Steyer, Becerra, and Republican candidate Steve Hilton are battling for the top spots in the gubernatorial primary, which will take place across California on June 2nd.
