Alabama is headed for a high-profile political rematch this November as Republican Senator Tommy “Coach” Tuberville and former Democrat Senator Doug Jones both secured dominant victories in their respective gubernatorial primaries.
During the recent primary elections, Tuberville cruised to victory with roughly 85% of the vote in the Republican race, while Jones locked down the Democrat nomination by capturing just over 78% of the vote.

The upcoming general election sets up a direct replay of the 2020 U.S. Senate race, where Tuberville famously unseated Jones, who was the incumbent at the time.
“Thank you Alabama. It’s been an honor representing you over the past 6 years in the United States Senate. And I look forward to earning your vote to be Alabama’s next Governor in November. We’re just getting started,” Tuberville posted to X after the election.
Jones also expressed gratitude to voters in the state following his win.
“Thank you, Alabama, for believing in this campaign and in what we can build together. This has never been about on person. It’s about creating an Alabama that works better for everyone. We’ve got work to do, but tonight we celebrate. Thank you for your trust. Let’s keep it going to November!” Jones said.
Additionally, President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Tuesday to highlight Tuberville’s win, whom he had endorsed.

“I was proud to endorse ‘Coach’ when he ran for the Senate in 2020, and am honored to do so again. Tommy Tuberville has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next Governor of the Great State of Alabama,” Trump had posted to Truth Social on Monday, encouraging Alabama voters to go to the polls.

Tuberville and Jones previously faced off in the 2020 U.S. Senate election, a contest that saw Tuberville unseat the incumbent Jones and reclaim the seat for the Republican Party.
Jones had originally won the seat during a notable 2017 special election to fill the vacancy left by Republican Jeff Sessions, marking the first time a Democrat had won a U.S. Senate race in Alabama since 1992. Since Tuberville chose to launch a gubernatorial campaign rather than seek a second term in Washington, his Senate seat is now open.
A crowded field of Democrat and Republican candidates entered the race to succeed him, but since no single contender in either primary managed to secure an absolute majority, both parties are heading to June runoff elections to finalize their nominees.
