WHO boss issues warning over ‘tsunami’ of Omicron, Delta COVID cases


The simultaneous spread of the Omicron and Delta COVID-19 variants is creating a “tsunami of cases” worldwide, the World Health Organization boss warned.

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news briefing on Wednesday that Omicron and Delta were “twin threats.”

“I am highly concerned that Omicron, being highly transmissible and spreading at the same time as Delta, is leading to a tsunami of cases,” he said.

He added that the circulation of both variants was driving up case numbers to record highs — leading to a spike in hospitalizations and deaths in parts of the world.

It comes as new COVID cases in the US spiked to their highest level on record to an average of 265,000 per day — driven largely by the Omicron variant.
