Members of the Rapid Support Forces and allied militias have committed genocide in Sudan, the U.S. government has determined.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced his determination in a statement Tuesday, and he previously declared in December 2023 that they had engaged in war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing.
The “conflict of unmitigated brutality,” which began in April 2023 when the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces began fighting, has led to the “world’s largest humanitarian catastrophe,” according to Blinken. More than 30 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance and tens of thousands of people have been killed since the conflict erupted in April 2023, though the exact death toll is unknown.
