United Airlines Boeing plane loses wheel during takeoff from Los Angeles


A United Airlines Boeing plane lost a wheel while taking off from Los Angeles.

The detached wheel landed on an aircraft in an airport employee parking lot, smashing a car window. No casualties were reported, however, and the plane safely landed in Denver.

The aircraft was a Boeing 757-200 with 174 passengers on board, according to FlightRadar24 data reviewed by the Guardian. Production of the aircraft ceased in 2004.

“The wheel has been recovered in Los Angeles, and we are investigating what caused this event,” United said in a statement on Monday.
