Trump tells Senate to attach voter ID to DHS funding ‘for Jesus’

President Donald Trump reupped his call for voter identification to be included in any deal to fund the Department of Homeland Security, telling Senate Republicans to cancel their upcoming recess if necessary.

Trump said Monday during a Safe Task Force Roundtable in Memphis, Tennessee, that any funding for the DHS should be tied to voter identification, including photo requirements and proof of citizenship.

“It should be part of the homeland security bill, and I’m requesting that the Republican senators do that immediately,” Trump said during his remarks. “You don’t have to take a fast vote. Don’t worry about Easter going home. In fact, make this one for Jesus, OK? Make this one for Jesus.”

The Senate is expected to break for a two-week recess starting Friday to observe Passover and Easter. However, GOP leaders and Trump have floated canceling the break if Congress cannot reach a deal to fund the DHS.
