Trump signed an executive order delaying a TikTok ban. Now, its future is in limbo

TikTok, one of the most popular social media platforms in the United States, has four days to reach a deal divesting it of Chinese ownership before it goes dark.

The app, which is owned by China’s ByteDance, boasts roughly 170 million monthly active users across the country but faces extinction on April 5 if it fails to sell operations to a U.S. buyer. President Donald Trump said Sunday he’d like “to see TikTok remain alive,” adding that there are “a lot of potential buyers” interested in the platform.

The president’s latest remarks on the matter came after he signed an executive order on Jan. 20 giving TikTok a 75-day lifeline before the ban is implemented, putting the long-term future of the platform in limbo.
