Trump reverses course on SAVE Act demand, open to GOP deal to end DHS shutdown

President Trump is willing to back the Republican plan to end the partial government shutdown and fund the Department of Homeland Security without money for Immigration and Customs Enforcement removal, a White House official told The Washington Times.

“Conversations are ongoing, but this deal seems to be acceptable,” the official told The Times on Tuesday.

Under the proposed plan, Republicans would pass the DHS funding bill without money for immigration enforcement to get Democrats on board with it. Then, once that’s passed, Republicans will muscle through a partisan bill without Democrats’ votes to fund ICE and also include long-sought voter ID provisions in the same bill.

It is unclear if Democrats would accept that plan.

Several Senate Republicans told reporters Monday evening that Mr. Trump was moving toward backing the agreement after a meeting with him at the White House.
