Trump Judge Strikes Down DeSantis’ Gambling Expansion, Appeal Pending


A Trump-appointed U.S. district judge, Dabney Friedrich, struck down Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R) gambling expansion compact with the Seminole Tribe earlier this week over concerns of gaming monopolization.

Though the judge struck down the compact, the ruling is being appealed by the Seminole Tribe. The tribe has also not shut off its statewide gambling app, the matter in question.

The gambling expansion was ruled to violate the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) because gambling may only take place on tribal lands. The gambling expansion permitted individuals to place bets located anywhere in the state on an app.

The state of Florida argued the expansion was legal because the app’s servers were on tribal land. But the judge dismissed the argument as “fiction.”
