Politician quotes ‘The West Wing’ during speech, calls it ‘unconscious homage’


An Australian politician delivered a speech Monday that contained segments that were strikingly similar to one given by the fictional US president in the hit show “The West Wing.”

Will Fowles, a Labor Party member serving in the Victorian Legislative Assembly, admitted Tuesday that he is a fan of “The West Wing.” He told a reporter his speech “was an unconscious homage” to the show’s creator, News.com.au reported.

“We did not expect, nor did we invite, this confrontation with a ferocious and feckless enemy,” Fowles told Parliament in his Monday remarks.

Jed Bartlet, the fictional US president played by Martin Sheen in the show, said something very similar in one episode, the report said.

“We did not expect, nor did we invite, a confrontation with evil,” Bartlet said.

The similarities were first noticed by State Political Reporter James Talia.

In a Tuesday morning radio interview, Talia asked Fowles about his discovery.
