Pelosi is re-nominated for speaker by House Democrats

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was renominated for her position of Speaker of the House of Representatives by the members of the House Democrats on Wednesday after running unopposed, paving the way for a fourth two-year term in the role and securing her another term as the leader of the Democrats in the House.

During the 2018 midterm elections, Pelosi, who is now 80 years old, vowed that she would not run for re-election as Speaker of the House in 2022. This will most likely be her final term in the position and, with Democrats still holding a majority of House seats, she is widely expected to win re-election.

Pelosi first became speaker in 2006 after that year’s midterm elections that saw a blue wave sweep the House amidst an embattled George W. Bush administration, making her the first, and still only, female to ever hold the speakership.
