
The following is an installment of “On This Day,” a series celebrating America’s 250th anniversary by following the actions of Gen. George Washington, the Continental Congress, and the men and women whose bravery and sacrifice led up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
In his general orders for the day, Gen. George Washington warns about the lingering presence of the British fleet in Boston Harbor. Washington indicates that their evacuation “leaves abundant reason” to suspect that something is not right.

Washington worries about a possible “sudden blow” to Boston and orders his regimental commanders to stand ready to respond instantly to that possibility.
