NYC Mayor Eric Adams calls immigrants ‘excellent swimmers’ who could fill lifeguard roles

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has suggested that immigrants fill the city’s need for lifeguards, citing how they are “excellent swimmers.”

The mayor made the comment during a City Hall meeting in which he discussed the city’s lifeguard staffing ahead of the summer months. Adams argued that these positions could be filled quicker if the process of immigrants receiving their work visas were sped up.

“How do we have a large body of people that are in our city, our country, that are excellent swimmers and at the same time we need lifeguards — and the only obstacle is that we won’t give them the right to work to become a lifeguard,” the mayor said.
