Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) insisted in an address to Californians on Tuesday night that “democracy is under assault” by President Donald Trump after he deployed the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles without the governor’s approval.
“When Donald Trump sought blanket authority to commandeer the National Guard, he made that order apply to every state in this nation,” Newsom said after days of anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement protests in Los Angeles. “California may be first, but it clearly will not end here. Other states are next. Democracy is next.”
Newsom previously accused Trump of breaking the law when he deployed the National Guard and, later on, the Marines to quell the riots. On Monday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against the Trump
