Newark Liberty International Airport will reopen one of its runways that was closed for construction and contributed to a host of problems the airport has faced in recent weeks.
Runway 4L-22R, one of Newark’s two main runways, was shut down on April 15 for a $121 million routine construction project and was scheduled to reopen on June 15. As of Monday, it is back open, 13 days ahead of schedule.
There has been a slew of problems at the airport in recent weeks, in addition to the runway closure, including two air traffic control outages between the radar and communications systems and staffing shortages. The air traffic controllers were unable to see or communicate with the planes around the airport for as long as 90 seconds
