New global study will examine how COVID-19 affects the brain


A new international study will examine whether COVID-19 patients are at higher risk for neurological complications including Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Two groups of participants will be monitored — people with confirmed cases of coronavirus who have been discharged from hospitals and those already enrolled in existing international research studies, the Alzheimer’s Association said.

The major study was announced Tuesday in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Health experts from more than 30 countries, along with the World Health Organization, will look into the short- and long-term consequences of COVID infections on the central nervous system.

Recovered patients will be examined at six, nine and 18 months.

In October, a study found that most patients hospitalized with coronavirus experienced neurological problems, including degenerative brain diseases.
