Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday she would step aside from leadership in 2022, honoring a pledge she made two years ago.
“I will abide by those limits,” the California Democrat told reporters.
Pelosi, 80, won her party’s nomination to run for speaker in a voice vote taken virtually on Wednesday. No Democrat ran against her, but swing district lawmakers in her party have expressed a desire to elect a new, younger leadership team.
The House Democratic majority is poised to shrink substantially after a surprising number of losses. Republicans have flipped 11 Democrat seats so far, with several outstanding contests favoring the GOP.
Pelosi, nonetheless, was renominated for speaker, and lawmakers reelected the rest of the senior Democratic leadership team, who are all in their 70s and 80s.
Pelosi will have to win an election on the House floor the first week in January, which will require a nearly unanimous Democratic vote.
