Motive for ex-Marine’s massacre of Florida family may never be known


A deranged ex-Marine’s motive for the brutal massacre of a Florida family — including a 3-month-old baby — may never be known, a local prosecutor said.

“The big question that all of us has is, ‘Why?’” State Attorney Brian Haas told WTVJ-TV. “We will not know today or maybe never.”

Bryan Riley, 33, is being held without bail after allegedly shooting four people dead and wounding an 11-year-old girl in Lakeland in what police describe as a random attack on total strangers.

He has allegedly said that God spoke to him.

“He is evil in the flesh,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told CBS News. “Just because you have mental health issues does not mean you are not criminally liable.

“I will never be able to unsee that mother with that deceased infant in her arms,” the sheriff said. “It is a horror of the utmost magnitude.”
