A British woman who vanished on a New Zealand hiking trip was found dead in a canyon on Friday, according to new reports.
Stephanie Simpson, 32, of Essex, is believed to have died after stepping into a waterfall last weekend in Mount Aspiring National Park, the BBC reported.
Authorities discovered Simpson’s body around 1:40 p.m. local time in the Pyke Creek area — and believe that she was washed into the canyon by the rushing water, according to the report.
There were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Simpson’s death, Sgt. Mark Kirkwood, from West Coast Search and Rescue, told the BBC.
Simpson apparently left the hiking track, removed her boots and stepped into the waterfall, according to Kirkwood.
“It’s a very hazardous area,” the official said. “We have no idea why she went into the water.”
Relatives who traveled to New Zealand from the UK confirmed that the body was Simpson’s, according to the report.
