Judge orders Trump to restore over $500 million in federal grants to UCLA

A federal judge ordered the Trump administration on Monday to restore over $500 million in federal grants to the University of California system.

The Justice Department in July halted the distribution of federal grants worth $584 million due to the government’s findings that the academic institution had failed to take sufficient action to protect Jewish students on campus from antisemitic harassment.

U.S. District Judge Rita F. Lin in San Francisco ruled this week that the Trump administration likely violated the Administrative Procedure Act, which requires specific procedures and explanations for federal funding cuts, when it notified the university about the funding cuts through form letters. She granted a preliminary injunction on the matter, meaning the government will be required to restore hundreds of millions in federal funding
