Italy’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo was killed in an attack on a United Nations convoy while visiting the Central African nation, officials said.
The Italian ambassador, Luca Attanasio, was traveling around 10:15 a.m. Monday when the group was attacked near the town of Kanyamahoro, the Virunga National Park told Reuters.
A military policeman traveling with him was also killed in the attack.
“It is with deep sorrow that the Foreign Ministry confirms the death today in Goma of the Italian Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luca Attanasio, and of a policemen from the Carabinieri,” the Italian foreign ministry said in a statement.
“The ambassador and the soldier were traveling in a car in a convoy of MONUSCO, the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo,” it added.
