Iceland Reports 80% Increase in Stillbirths and Neonatal Deaths in 2021


Iceland reported a shocking increase in stillbirths and neonatal deaths between 2020 and 2021.

“Stillbirths increased in 2021 by 8 from the previous year. In 2020, there were 9 stillbirths, but 17 in 2021. The number of stillbirths per 1,000 live births increased from 2.0 to 3.5 between years,” Frettin reported.

You need to look back to 2004 to get the same number as in 2021.

The average stillbirth per 1000 live children for the last nine years (2011-2020) is 2 per 1000. The increase is therefore 75% compared to the average of the last nine years before that.
