Anonymous hackers have reportedly undermined a Russian government website in order to launch a Bitcoin (BTC) giveaway scam.
The malicious actors targeted a website that belongs to local government officials in the Russian city of Ryazan, reports the local Russian news outlet Izvestia.
Advertised as the “Ryazani online lottery,” the hackers initially claimed to offer 0.025 ВТС ($1,300) to every visitor who installed a particular application on their device.
The offering was then revised, stating $1,000 in BTC would be given away to five randomly chosen people, as seen in screenshots of the fraud website published by a local news outlet.
Zooming out from Russia, data from the renowned data analytics from Chainalysis has been keeping track of where crypto-related scams are growing globally.
According to Chainalysis, Africa is leading the world in illicit crypto activity, followed by Eastern Europe, where Russia is located.
