Greg Abbott proactively deploys 5,000 National Guard troops ahead of weekend protests

Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) announced on Thursday that he is deploying 5,000 National Guard troops in response to planned protests this weekend against President Donald Trump and his administration’s immigration raids.

“Peaceful protests are part of the fabric of our nation, but Texas will not tolerate the lawlessness we have seen in Los Angeles in response to President Donald Trump’s enforcement of immigration law,” Abbott said. “Anyone engaging in acts of violence or damaging property will be arrested and held accountable to the full extent of the law.”

Abbott will also deploy more than 2,000 state police officers to assist local law enforcement officers and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in maintaining civil order.
