Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger has become the first Republican to publicly demand the resignation of Matt Gaetz — and he cites newly reported money links between his embattled fellow congressman and a sex trafficking-accused pal.
“Matt Gaetz needs to resign,” Kinzinger, (R-Ill.), tweeted Thursday night.
The tweet links to a Daily Beast story that details $900 in cash transfers made on a single night in May, 2018 between Gaetz and the Florida congressman’s friend, Joel Greenberg.
The former Seminole County tax collector is currently indicted on 33 counts, including sex trafficking charges involving a 17-year-old girl.
Earlier Thursday, Greenberg’s lawyer said in court that his client intends to take a plea deal in the case, in which he allegedly paid the girl for sex.
Gaetz sent $900 via Venmo to Greenberg that night — and the very next morning, Greenberg sent $900 to three young women, one of whom was only 18, according to a report.
