Former GOP New Jersey governor endorses Democrat Mikie Sherrill in gubernatorial race


Whitman, who co-chairs the independent Forward Party with Andrew Yang and endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris for president, rebuffed Sherrill’s opponent, Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli, with the endorsement.

“She’s the right person for the job,” Whitman said of Sherrill in an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I’ve met with her. She knows how to organize. She knows how to manage and to lead… Beyond that, it would be really nice to have another woman.”

After ousting former Democratic Gov. James Florio, Whitman became New Jersey’s first female governor from 1994 to 2001. She also served under former President George W. Bush as his Environmental Protection Agency administrator from January 2001 to June 2003.
