A flood has trapped 14 construction workers inside a highway tunnel in China, where rescuers are now working feverishly to pump out the water and find survivors.
Authorities have not been able to contact the workers since they were trapped around 3:30 a.m. in the South China city of Zhuhai.
“Rescue work is proceeding in an intense and orderly way,” the Zhuhai city emergency department said in a statement.
More than 1,000 workers with 22 fire trucks and five pumper vehicles are now involved in the massive rescue effort at the site.
The workers were about three-quarters of a mile inside the tunnel, which is under construction and runs under a reservoir.
The crews heard a “strange noise” and were ordered to evacuate, but the two dozen workers inside were unable to get out and have been trapped since.
