Europe’s leaders hope for tourism rebirth amid declining COVID cases


European leaders are hoping for a resurgence in tourism this summer as COVID-19 cases plummet across the continent and vaccination rates soar.

With tourists starting to arrive again at prime vacation spots such as Ibiza, Rome and Corsica, European leaders are hopeful of a rebirth in an industry that was devastated during the height of the pandemic last year when European countries led the world in hospitalizations and deaths, according to a report.

Over the last week, Europe saw the largest decline in new COVID-19 infections and deaths, with 44 percent of adults having received at least a first dose of the vaccine, according to statistics from the World Health Organization and European Center for Prevention and Control.

“We don’t speak of 2020. We speak of from today onward,” said Guglielmo Miani, president of Milan’s Montenapoleone luxury shopping district, where European and American tourists have started coming back.
