Don Young, America’s oldest congressman, tests positive for COVID-19


The nation’s oldest and longest-serving member of Congress, Republican Rep. Don Young of Alaska, on Thursday announced that he has the coronavirus.

“I have tested positive for COVID-19. I am feeling strong, following proper protocols, working from home in Alaska, and ask for privacy at this time. May God Bless Alaska,” Young, 87, tweeted.

Young is a colorful libertarian-leaning conservative who supports gun rights and federally legalizing marijuana. He called global warming “the biggest scam since the Teapot Dome.”

He was re-elected Nov. 3 to a 25th term, according to an Associated Press projection made Tuesday.

The serious respiratory bug has infected many other lawmakers, but so far none have died from the virus that disproportionately claims the lives of elderly people.

Since March, COVID-19 has infected 10.5 million Americans and killed 242,000. Cases are surging in the US, with a record-high number of diagnoses — about 143,00 — on Wednesday.
