A coalition of 14 Republican and Democrat Senators is pleading with the Department of Justice (DOJ) to provide an early release to elderly felons in federal prison in the midst of the Chinese coronavirus crisis.
Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Mike Lee (R-UT), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Kamala Harris (D-CA) are asking the DOJ to release “the most vulnerable” inmates in federal prison:
The CDC has advised [adults over 60 years old and individuals with chronic medical conditions] to avoid crowds and stay at home as much as possible. Conditions of confinement do not afford individuals the opportunity to take proactive steps to protect themselves, and prisons often create the ideal environment for the transmission of contagious disease.
