Connecticut woman charged with abandoning baby in dumpster


A Connecticut woman has been charged with abandoning an 8-month-old girl in a dumpster, police said.

Andiana Velez, a 24-year-old Hamden woman who police suspect was the child’s babysitter, was charged with risk of injury to a child, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment after the infant was found alive Monday in a trash bin outside a New Haven apartment complex, the New Haven Register reported.

Velez is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday morning.

Capt. Anthony Duff said maintenance workers at the Presidential Gardens apartment complex found the girl injured inside the dumpster before she was rushed to a hospital, where she was listed in stable condition Monday with burns to her hands.

“New Haven police and the state Department of Children and Families are continuing to investigate the cause of the child’s injuries,” Duff told the newspaper. “Investigators have not yet determined who is responsible for the infant’s burn injuries.”

Velez also allegedly assaulted the girl’s mother earlier Monday.
